These recommendations were drafted in co-operation with the tunnelling committees of Austria and Switzerland and recommended to be followed there. Pointers for the technical limits of application for individual systems and components as well as optimised possibilities of adjustment for operation and changing geotechnical marginal conditions are provided especially for shield excavation. The explanations and terms relate to the previous «Recommendations for selecting and evaluating Tunnel Boring Machines». All interested colleagues are invited to scrutinise them at length and then put forward any additions and corrections.

These recommendations were of significance outside of Germany as well, as they were drafted in collaboration with the tunnelling committees of Austria and Switzerland and published in all 3 countries. As a result, a supra-national standard was defined and a common basis for arriving at decisions in choosing tunnelling machines in the 3 countries agreed on.
