Tunnel Langes Feld

The construction lots Lechler marshalling yard and intersection building are parts of the 4.65 km long Langes Feld Tunnel located a short distance from where the new Mannheim-Stuttgart line joins the existing route Stuttgart-Bretten. On account of its low overburden of from 1.5 to 6.0 m, the section of tunnel was built through cut-and-cover between anchored supporting walls. The construction Lot - marshalling yard - crosses below a total of 49 tracks over a distance of 440 m. 17 tracks were closed or shortened. The other tracks had to be kept open - apart from short intervals - by means of auxiliary bridges passing above the excavation. Coming from Langes Feld, the two-track tunnel initially has a clear width of 12.30 m. This increases to 17.20 m as from roughly the central construction lot and together with the central wall installed in the final blocks forms the transition to the two adjoining single-track tunnel tubes. The entire length of the tunnel is located in groundwater so that it was provided with a glued bituminous seal with ECD membrane and external copper serrated strip. Through a system of longitudinal and cross drains in conjunction with groundwater barrages, the circulation of the groundwater was assured following the end of construction. During construction, some 20,000 m³ of concrete and 2,200 t of steel were used. The 625 m long tunnel section of the Lechler construction lot passes under the goods track from Zuffenhausen to Kornwestheim together with the 140 m long construction lot for the intersection building. During construction, around 21,000 m³ of concrete and 2,200 t of steel were used. From December 1987 till 1988, a water cleansing plant with a performance of 36 m³/h was operated to purify the groundwater.
