Dortmund-Berghofen Tunnel

The federal highway B 236n links the A 2 federal motorway with the A 1 federal motorway and leads to Dortmund-Hörde. The new construction will continue the road from Dortmund-Hörde in a southern direction towards the city boundary of Dortmund-Schwerte. The tunnel is to be produced in 3 sections and is 1,310 m long;

  • mining means length 405 m
  • cut-and-cover length 649 m
  • mining means length 256 m.

The tunnel is being executed with a triple frame in the cut-and-cover section. ln the section produced by trenchless means, an overlapping pillared wall cross-section was chosen. The narrowest route alignment was selected at the planning stage. This signifies that a 1 m thick central pillar is needed to carry the weight. A Voest-Alpine AM 1 OS EC roadheader was commissioned to first drive the pillar heading followed by the wall headings. Shotcrete is used as temporary support. Later on, a permanent lining of watertight concrete will be added. Geographically speaking, the site is located in Upper Carbon coal-bearing layers that are typical for the region so that mining subsidence and mining damage are prevalent there. Prior to undertaking the project, the area had to be redeveloped through grouting a cement suspension to close the cavities.
