Mehrum Power Station

For the 700 MW coal power station Mehrum on the Mittellandkanal a far-reaching redevelopment of the sewer and shaft system as well as the construction of a total of 2 measuring shafts, 1 sluice/ pumping station and initially, a sluice station were required. An inspection revealed that the major portion of the approx. 5,000 m long sewer network required thorough renovation as a result of leaking shaft structures and defective pipelines with damage, such as cracks, sleeve leakages, discharge obstructions, etc. Given exceptional operational states, as e.g. fire incidents, it was no longer possible to ensure that escaping substances and above all, extinguishing water could be reliably retained. Such polluted waste would have been transferred to the plant's own sewer network and then directly to the Mittellandkanal and/or the retaining basin. In advance of the redevelopment measures, a far-reaching sewer cleansing scheme and a TV inspection were undertaken by the VEBA Kraftwerke Ruhr AG. The damage that was determined was classified and a redevelopment concept presented. As practically the entire redevelopment project had to be carried out without affecting normal operations at the power station, the time required for execution was a decisive factor in selecting the redevelopment method. It was decided to select a trenchless method from the Trolining GmbH. Partial damage was tackled by cutting and priming work through robot technology and through the application of approx. 65 partial Inliners, known as Point Liners. With the Trolining system, which requires only a limited amount of space for installing the Inliners, redevelopment work can be executed in the nominal width range of DN 150 to 1000 regardless of the material and cross-sectional form of the existing sewer.
