Tunnel Göggelsbuch

The New Railway Line of the German Railway System from Nuremberg to lngolstadt and the renovation of the lngolstadt- Munich line is part of the "Deutsche Einheit" track traffic project. The 89 km long New Railway Line is made up of three lots: north, middle and south. The Tunnel Göggelsbuch is in the north lot and is 2,287 m in length. The geology of the Tunnel Göggelsbuch area which is to be driven through is made up primarily of "Feuerletten" which belongs to the "Mittlerer Keuper". The rock formations in the "Feuerletten" are fine to middle sandy clay stones. In the area of Tunnel Göggelsbuch, the "Feuerletten" is, in general, horizontally layered. Groundwater leading banks of sandstone and groundwater filled clay stone structures are to be expected throughout the entire length of the drive. No permanent drainage final has been planned for the final tunnel installation. The drainage system which is being used during the drive will be closed up after installation of the interior lining. Rock water as well as water used during the construction is being re-routed into a reservoir and a neutralising facility before being released into the drainage canal. The tunnel is being constructed in the mining method from the north as well as from the south. It has been planned to firstly cut the crown. Afterwards- also from both sides excavation of the invert and, at short intervals, excavation of the floor will follow. An already existing rescue shaft in the middle of the tunnel will be broadened, parallel to the crown drive. The tunnel is being built using the shotcrete method. Because of the unfavourable geological conditions, temporary crown floors throughout the entire tunnel length and a strong anchoring of the tunnel face are required. Due to geological and hydrological reasons, the tunnel is being constructed with a closed vaulted floor. The portal areas and the cut-and-cover areas are an exception. In these areas, the tunnel will be built with a floor plate of water impermeable concrete. Sheets of plastic will be installed in both the vaults and the flooring. The block-joints will be additionally sealed with expandite rubber. The length of the block segments in the mining area is 12.50 m. ln the cut-and-cover section and the portals, a block length of 10.00 m has been selected. The entire New Railway Line will be equipped with a fixed track and is being layed so that the trains can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h.
