Tunnel Siegaue, St. Augustin

River Sieg as well as the federal motorway BAB A 560 (12 m overburden), which is undercut protected by a reinforced concrete cover. The mined tunnel also passes below St Martinus Church as well as the Community Centre with only thin overcapping of 14 m. The horizontal distance of the tunnel axis to the church amounts to approx. 17 m, the Community Centre is located roughly above the tunnel axis. In geological terms, the tunnel is located in the transition zone between the Sieg Lowland and the Pleiser Hills. By and large, a distinction is drawn between 3 types of ground, fills, quaternary and tertiary. The fills with thicknesses of up to 9 m are encountered beneath the topsoil. Beneath the fills, quaternary deposits comprising widely spread, silty gravels and sands are to be found. They are up to 8 m thick. The boundary layer to the tertiary is to be found roughly at the height of the tunnel roof. The tertiary mainly comprises clays and silts with varying proportions of fine sands, including lentils. Through the entire heading zone, there is a groundwater level in the quaternary layers, the boundary layers are also water-bearing. The groundwater is within the catchment area of the River Sieg so that the water levels react correspondingly. A pilot tunnel with an internal diameter of 2.8 m was jacked prior to heading the actual tunnel itself. From the pilot tunnel, the required groundwater maintenance (vacuum lances and vacuum wells) was provided and in sections, a HDBV roof was created. After construction on the main tunnel is over, the pilot tunnel will be refilled. The mined heading is being executed as a wall bench drive with advance supporting through lances. The core crown, bench and base directly follow each other. The very short period of construction calls for tunnelling to be undertaken from both sides. The inner shell will subsequently be created in impermeable concrete to keep water out.
