U6 Stuttgart, Urban Railway Connection Fasanenhof
The U 6 Fasanenhof urban rail tunnel is part of the roughly 2.75 km long new route connecting the suburb of Fasanenhof and the Fasanenhof-Ost industrial estate to the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB AG) existing urban railway network. The Bonhoeffer-Kirche stop marks the start of the tunnel, which was produced in the vicinity of the residential area by cut-and-cover over a length of 640 m in a local green belt. The central stop Europaplatz is located in the transition zone between the cut-and-cover construction section and the 380 m long tunnel section completed by mining means. This was essential as a large residential district, the federal highway B 27 and an industrial building all had to be undertunnelled. The sensitive areas of the mined tunnels were driven in 2008 by means of a crown drive in the highest excavation class. The tricky marginal conditions were responded to by pipe umbrellas, lances and face anchors as well as a reduced length of advance of 80 cm. The prevailing geology corresponded well with the results of the advance investigation. As a result deformations were confined to a minimum in spite of in some cases shallow overburden. Mainly lias layers were encountered in the mined tunnel zone. An extensive measurement programme represents a part of the driving concept for all tunnelling sites of the regional capital of Stuttgart. Generally speaking this approach has proved itself. When Operating urban railway tunnels the aspect of vibrations as well as nuisance caused by structure-borne noise must first and foremost be taken into account. As a result this subject was accorded great attention during the planning phase. In order to avoid causing bother to local residents a heavy mass-spring system was catered for at an early stage of the construction process. After completing the inner shell subsequent urban railway operations were simulated on a test facility so that the mass-spring system could be properly dimensioned and geared to the anticipated frequencies.
