Branichtunnel, L536, Schriesheim

The Branichtunnel is part of the L 536 state road from Ladenburg to Wilhelmsfeld and was built between 2011 and 2016 to relieve Schriesheim of through traffic.

The 1,796m long tunnel crosses under the Branich, which is up to 280m high, north of Schriesheim with a maximum cover of 115m. The entire mountain spur is made of moderately to heavily fissured granite. On the western slope of the Branich, the granite rock is covered by a mighty loess cover.

The construction of the tunnel was mainly done in closed construction. Due to the geological conditions, the cross section of the vault was constructed with an open-soil formation or a sole vault. The open construction method in the portal areas was carried out with a rectangular cross-section and subsequent overfilling.

The tunnel has a gradient of approx. 2.5% from west to east. The tunnel has a cross slope of 2.5% except for the area of the change in slope. The tunnel tube has two lanes, each 3.75m wide and 1m wide. The clear width is thus 9.5m, the clear height in the tunnel axis 5.05m.

The tunnel has five emergency exits, whereby the emergency exits 1-4 lead via cross passages into a 1,145 m long rescue tunnel, which is located near the west portal. Emergency exit 5 leads out into the open via a separate 106 m long rescue tunnel. In addition, two breakdown bays are located inside the tunnel.

The operational equipment of the tunnel was designed in accordance with RABT 2006. During normal operation, the jet fans, which are arranged in the eastern section of the tunnel in the area without intermediate ceiling above the clearance gauge, serve as longitudinal ventilation.

During fire operation, two axial fans in the West Operations Centre extract the smoke via openings in the false ceiling.
