Metro Hamburg, U4 HafenCity
The Hamburg HafenCity will be linked with the Hamburg Underground network in the spring of 2012. Around 35,000 passengers will then use the new U 4 Metro line on a daily basis. The U4 runs from the Jungfernstieg to the HafenCity at a depth of up to 42 m and in doing so underpasses urban built-up areas and part of the Port of Hamburg. The project is split into three sections: The new U 4 tunnel joins the Hamburg Hochbahn's existing Underground network at the Jungfernstieg stop. Here concourse levels, an operational building and additional escape galleries are to be set up apart from carrying out all additional conversion measures at the existing stop. The central section embraces the undertunnelling of the city centre using shield driving with a hydro-shield and supporting with reinforced concrete segments. The two single-track tunnels are to be driven one after the other: from the starting shaft in the Überseequartier towards the city centre up to the target shaft at the Jungfernstieg stop. The concept foresees the building of 4 emergency exits with cross-passages to the two tunnel tubes. Production will be undertaken in deep construction pits, which are to be supported with shotcrete. The cross-passages are partially to be driven protected by subsoil freezing. The route runs through the Hamburg Geest as well as in the Elbe and Alster marches. There are fills close to the surface reaching a thickness of up to 15 m in the HafenCity. Beneath these fills there are alternating layers of organic soft layers, sands, boulder clay, mica clay as well as mica silt. ln the roughly 1.2 km long section within the HafenCity the two new stations Überseequartier and HafenCity Universität will be created by cut-an-cover protected by diaphragm walls. The section of tunnel located between the two stations will be constructed in the form of a twin-track rectangular tunnel also using cut-and-cover. The “Magdeburger Hafen” will also be crossed here in an excavation pit with sheet pile wall with a back-anchored underwater concrete base.
