Metro Munich, Line U1 south, construction lot 3 - metro station St.-Quirin-Platz and running tunnels
The Line U 1 South links the districts of Giesing and Harlaching with the Underground network. The Lot 3 was created close to the surface above the groundwater in the gravel deposits, which are more than 20 m thick at this point. The station building is located in a former gravel quarry, which has since been filled. The "bored piling-top cover" method, which has proved itself on so many occasions, seemed the obvious approach to use. The extensive "concrete collar" for the roof construction on the western side was extremely complex in terms of the formwork required. A glass roof spans the ticket hall and the central third of the platforms. The "fish belly shaped" roof extends over the entire station width at its centre. At the west side of the station, the greenery has been set lower and harmonised with the glass roof. The transparent construction permits a view from the platform to the green area and provides the station with natural light. The route section running along the Soyerhofstrasse was driven from the south by mining means using shotcrete in the mainly stable gravels of the Munich Hochterrasse. Two single-track tunnels were constructed along this section. Some 180 m to the north of the starting shaft, the tracks had to be linked to one another by means of points. At this spot the 2 tunnels join up to form a 2-track section over a distance of some 60 m. Considerably more work was required for this section on account of the far greater tunnel cross-section and the geological conditions. The final tunnel profile was first arrived at by driving 7 successive part-sections, with the benches of the wall tunnels having to be temporarily filled with gravel at the centre, before opening the residual crown.
