Underground car park in Schloßberg Wertheim

Within the scope of restoring the old part of town, additional parking space was created in Wertheim. The Schloßberg, which steeply juts upwards close to the town centre, offered ideal possibilities for a subsurface garage with short accesses to the shops and sights in the Altstadt. The special advantages of this subsurface garage facility were:

  • the old part of town was not disturbed by an ongoing construction project
  • good link-up with other traffic routes so that vehicles were not unnecessarily diverted through the Altstadt thus cutting down on traffic movements there
  • no danger of flooding.

The parking cavern was driven by mining means through a Middle Variegated Sandstone formation. It is located above the groundwater level. The rock was excavated through gentle blasting treatment and immediately secured by means of rock bolts and reinforced shotcrete. Two pedestrian accesses were provided in addition to a way-in and way-out. The parking cavern can accommodate 300 cars at two levels. The parking decks comprise a reinforced frame construction and are connected with each other by a ramp. The structure was also devised as a civil defence facility for some 4,100 persons. For this purpose, it was equipped with pressure-proof gates, access locks and corresponding filter and ventilation units.
