Vienna Underground Railway, U2/5 Stadium

The contract includes the Operating track to Erdberg Station in addition to the Stadium Station with the related route sections and the connected turning area. Work on this contract section has been progressing since May 2003. The route, the station and the turning area are being produced at an elevated level and run along the Vorgartenstraße to the Meierei Straße, the Stadium parking lot/Olympiaplatz in the southern area before ending up at the Stadiumtraining grounds shortly before the lchmanngasse. This elevated stretch is 990 m long. The operating track links the U2 running tracks with the service yard in Erdberg. The 1,754 m long single-track running tunnel was mainly produced as a shield tunnel by means of a hydro-shield with 6.80 m diameter. The drive started in November 2004 using a Herrenknecht TBM. The tunnel is to be driven beneath the A 4 motorway and the 2 main sewers prior to the route crossing the Wiener Prater nature conservation zone with many old trees and natural monuments. In the Prater area, the tunnel overburden amounts on average to roughly 15 m. Along the entire route, the groundwater table is located some 11 m above the tunnel roof. The tunnel is to be lined with reinforced concrete segments. Indented neoprene gaskets are to be installed between the segments. A segmental ring is 150 m wide on average and consists of 6 segments plus a small wedge-shaped keystone. The route runs through the middle of the Danube Valley and completely with in recent meanders. The geological sequence shows that fills can be expected close to the surface with areas of fill including riverbank sands and loams.
